Planning:

In this session The core questions for planning were:

  1. How do the official documents and regulations affect the planning of the teaching in your vocational field? Where can you find all this information?

Tuija on behalf of Green team presented us about different laws and regulations such as administrative law, occupational safety law, the law on vocational education, the law on public access and confidentiality of proceedings of public authorities as well as copyright. She explained us how financing plays a big role in vocational education and training these days specially due to digitalization. She used Kahoot mobile application to assess students’ understanding from her presentation. It was interesting but a bit challenging on my phone because I didn’t install it beforehand! 1. How do different learning theories and views of learning affect the planning of the teaching in your particular vocational field and in competence-based education? (Choose at least two different ones for comparison. Coordinate with team with core question 3 in order to choose different ones.)

In this session me and Timo presented our study about two main learning theories: behaviorism and constructivism in our vocational fields. The method we have chosen was ‘lecturing’ and ‘group discussion’. The plan was giving a short lecture about each theory and then bringing up a question or case for group discussion. At first we found a challenge concerning pair presentation. It wasn’t predicted! Each of us had prepared some questions and cases related to his/her vocational field. For example my discussion topic was concerning learning theories in computer science education and Timo’s topic was about management. Luckily, we could managed this challenge in a minute by agreeing on two more general cases, one from management field and another from teaching a foreign language. We had a good discussion that how different teaching theories affect students’ learning efficiency.

At the end of session, we got feedback from tutors. Even our presentation was enthusiastic and there was good interaction with others through discussions, but we need to improve our presentation via more practice, concentrating on core points and vocational cases. It was suggested to provide students ‘prematerials’ before sessions.

Tuomo on behalf of blue team presented their team work on connectivism and online teaching. By providing proper questions and cases such as online carpentry courses in North Korea, he could explain well the benefits and challenges related to this teaching methods.

  1. How do you find the core content of the curriculum? How and why we personalize study plans on different vocational school levels?

Sami on behalf of yellow team started his presentation by referring us to the Finland universities’ curriculum in our vocational field concerning its contents and the date that has been updated. Then we had discussion about the importance of curriculum and personal study plans to guide and facilitate students’ study life. He provided us the result of their team pretask through Survey Monkey questionnaire related to students’ experiences and knowledge about PSP. Click here to read more from his blog page!
